As someone who still uses POP email via Outlook on my desktop computer, I think it's important to mention an issue that seems to have been omitted from this thread. If you currently use POP on your computer's email client, you cannot just go in and change it to an IMAP account. Also, if you want to convert it to IMAP, there are specific steps you must take to first set up your IMAP account and then transfer any messages you might have saved in your POP account to your new IMAP account. These steps will vary depending on your email provider and your email client.
The below site appears to do a pretty good job of explaining the steps and provides a table with email clients in column 1 with columns 2 through 5 listing the email service providers Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, and Other. There are links at each intersection point of client and email service to get specific instructions to convert from POP to IMAP for that particular combination. I only read one set of these instructions but it was well done. Here's the link: http://www.pop2imap.com/how.php With Gmail, I have no problems keeping my desktop computer running Outlook as a POP account and having my iPhone email client set as IMAP. I have both POP and IMAP enabled in my Gmail account settings accessed via the web and when messages are downloaded to my computer, I have Gmail set to archive them. This necessitates that I keep track of what's been transferred to my computer when I access my mail via my phone but it's easy to keep track of what's where as long as I close Outlook on my computer before going out. I also like that I have access to all my Gmail messages since inception which currently uses only 39% of the generous account allotment provided by Google. You should log into your gmail account and check your settings. I think that maybe your gmail account is configured as a POP account; you should change it to IMAP. With IMAP there is no such option as "Leave a Copy on the Server". With IMAP all mail is synced between your gmail account and your devices. Of course you would also have to configure Outlook to use IMAP. I personally never liked gmail very much since I don't like their approach with labels and the All Mail account, but it will work if it is set up properly and if you google "Setting up Gmail in Outlook" you can find configuration which explains what you have to do. But as I said, you first of all have to make sure your gmail account on the web is set up to use IMAP. I have a similar problem with Gmail. I haven't used the account for a long time and there are 3000 messages in the inbox that I can't delete on my IPhone. I configured Microsoft Outlook to pick up the messages but for some reason, they don't delete from the server and I have the tick box unticked to leave a copy on the server. It seems like some how, I need to reset Microsoft Outlook to go to check for unred messages on the server and download them again. I tried deleteing the Microsoft outlook account and adding it back in again but this didn't work either. There doesn't seem to be a clear way on the web interface in Internet Explorer to delete all messages.
