Yes, I had already described in my previous post what you explained below.
The edit field has the same bug others had in the previous version of iOS
where one could not read what was being typed in edit fields within the
Contacts app.

Hi Joseph,

This is pretty much true. Read-only access to spreadsheets works fairly
well. Editing them is a bit trickier, though I've noticed that if you
double-tap and hold on a cell and then do an additional double-tap gesture,
you seem to get into editing mode and can change a cell. Without doing the
first double-tap and hold, double tapping a cell simply selects it for
further action. Given the fact that there are custom VO hints within the
Numbers app, it seems clear that some accessibility has been implemented.
However, I don't believe this accessibility is feature complete yet, and it
isn't documented anywhere that I have been able to find.

Subject: Looking for a user of the Numbers app

Hi all,

Since it was very unlikely I was going to get feedback on my question, I
decided to simply buy the Numbers app and experiment on my own.

Great news! For those looking to use spreadsheets like one does on Microsoft
Excel, well, your search is over!
...Somewhat. <Smile>.

I attached my iDevice to my desktop computer, and I very quickly and very
easily imported an Office 2007 .xlsx spreadsheet into Numbers using iTunes.
It was incredibly freakin easy!

I then touched the center of the screen to find the grid containing my data
and went about exploring it.

I was able to breeze through all my data swiping left to right and up and
down. For those who have used Excel, I was able to simulate the left and
right arrow navigation as well as up and down arrow navigation through the
spreadsheet as one would do in Excel 2007. For example, in my junk Excel
spreadsheet, I created a column called Animals and am able to swipe down and
review the following list of animals: Bear, Cat, Dog, Elephant, Frog. I then
swiped to the right and am able to read the cells in the second column
called Phone numbers: 555 444 6666, (777) 333-4444, 222.333.4444. No matter
how the data was entered, it was read by VoiceOver; this held true for the
other columns and rows of junk data. I'm really excited about this because
this means I can now add tons of spreadsheets on to my iPod 5th gen! WooHoo!

I've not tried any of Number's built-in functions, but I will say that
editing a cell within a spreadsheet seems to have some problems as I cannot
get any speech when I double-tap on an edit field and try to read the text
letter by letter. Not a problem as I find it makes my life much easier to
use my iDevice as a consumption tool rather than a production tool. With
that, I need only structure my spreadsheet on my desktop then import via
iTunes and all hassles solved--it takes mere seconds. <Smile>.

Wow! I'm using my Excel spreadsheets on this little iDevice! Amazing!

So far, so good. As far as the interface is concerned, most of what I have
encountered is definitely accessible, but I'll experiment a bit more and let
you know what is and what is not accessible.

A very happy Joseph the free tech guy!

Hi Richard,

Thank you for your post. I noticed you used the word "should." I'm actually
looking for something a bit more concrete. I'm hoping someone will write
back and state "yes, I can do it."

Since I will be creating and structuring the spreadsheets, I will know the
layout, so the content per each column and row is not likely to cause me
confusion.

I also plan on importing spreadsheets from Excel into Numbers, which means I
plan on creating the spreadsheets using Excel on my Windows computer, but
I'd like access to the information on the go on my iDevice.

Thanks for your suggestions,

Joseph

Hi Joseph,
While you can use vertical navigation to go down a column, when you flick
left or right between columns, you don't hear the column header, so as long
as you know what column a, b c etc are, then it should work well enough for
reading information.
I've not been very successful in creating spreadsheets on my iPhone, but I
have not spent a ton of time with it either.
Maybe someone out there has figured out how to create sheets and will chime
in.
Oddly enough, if you turn the rotor to rows, it doesn't work, but vertical
navigation does.
HTH,
Richard
