Hi Mary,
Prizmo can do this and does it nicely. Hi David, I don't suppose they commented on whether or not the KnFB reader will be able to deal with imported images, such as a PDF attachment sent to the phone in the email. It was very obviously completely pre-rehearsed, such that the presenters were able to present 100% flawless scans with perfect first-time images whilst properly exciting / working the crowd. All the items scanned were preselected, so the presenters obviously knew the items would work. The recognition speed was the same as the speed in TextGrabber. So, what does KNFB Reading Technologies contribute to the OCR arena? Aside from the fact that they are a company focused specifically on blindness access (which will make them far superior to everybody else in some people's eyes)? It appears that KNFB Reader is primed to take the picture whilst the iOS device is laying flat on the page. After activating the onscreen button, one lifts the device until the camera automatically activates. Therefore, the image is either assessing blank white space, page edge detection, or both. Given the cheerleading and the lack of specific detail given in the presentation, I will bet KNFB Reading Technologies will be charging a significant premium for this implementation of the technology. I do hope I am wrong. Oh, one final note, the Reader will not support currency in its initial version, and the presenters were evasive about if and when such may become available in the future.
