Hmm, but i use an IPhone daily, so i thought it would be much the same, but obviously it isn't, probably because the screen is bigger.

Ok, it sounds as though your difficulties are associated with using the
interface rather than the device. <Smile>. In other words, if you were to
purchase an iPad, it seems as though your problem will be exactly the same
since you've not gotten the hang of executing gestures. <Smile>.

When executing a swipe, try this...

Take your left thumb and fold the knuckle down. Now take your right index
finger and use the padded side of your finger tip to swipe from left to
right--from your knuckle to the tip of your finger nail. Try increasing the
speed so that you smoothly touch your thumb then slide past your nail
quickly and without stopping to leave your finger on the thumb at all as the
goal is to swipe across your thumb and never rest your index finger on it.
Be mindful of the sensation on your thumb, it should be one of feeling your
index finger sliding across in a straight line. Notice that you will only
have about a half inch or so of room to swipe across your thumb.

After practicing this swiping motion on your thumb, open your iDevice to the home screen and repeat the left to right swiping motion. Try to swipe on the
surface for a distance of about half an inch (the distance of your knuckle
to your fingertip). Move through all your apps from left to right then
reverse the swiping to move from your last app to your first one--you will
of course now be moving your finger from right to left. The goal in swiping
through all your apps is one of consistency in movement. Also try to be
mindful of the position of your iDevice in that if you hold it at a weird
angle then swipe, it might register as a vertical swipe rather than a
horizontal swipe. In other words, at first try to be very mindful of the
angle of your iDevice and the angle of your swipe and eventually it will
become habit and you will be able to focus more on what you're doing than
what is going wrong with your swiping. <Smile>.

If it helps, I've also read other listers state that they think of swiping
as using your fingertip to flick a smudge off of your computer screen, or
flick a bug off of one's skin. <Smile>.

Hi, But how about my question on navigating? Is the Mini easier to navigate
on than the Air or the other bigger pads? The problem i had was that i
couldn't swipe because i didn't manage to swipe in a streight line so other
commands got issued instead. Anyone think this sounds familiar?

Hi Feliciano,
I understand why you might say that but I respectfully disagree. I am
completely blind and I have both a iPhone and a iPad. There are
definitely
situations where the ability to display more information on the screen at
one time is beneficial, even for a Voice Over user. I especially find
this
to be true in the reading apps, like iBooks, Kindle, and Voice Dream. I
also like being able to fit longer lines and more lines on the screen when
working in notes or a text editor. A iPad certainly isn't for everyone
but
it isn't quite as simple as saying "a iPad isn't beneficial for a
completely
blind person using Voice Over".
Thanks,
Scott Duck

And iPad isn't really beneficial for totally blind person that uses
voiceover. Especially if that individual has an iPhone. The larger screen
on
an iPad just makes things more complicated than using an iPhone or iTouch.
Clients always ask me this question. I always tell them an iPhone is the
way
to go if you are totally blind as the larger screen makes things
difficult.

Hi,

The sad truth is that I hardly use my iPad at all. NB: this won't
change when the next iPad is announced unless they shrink it down to
the size of an iPhone which isn't going to happen for reasons that are
hopefully obvious.

I find browsing the internet to be more pleasurable on an iPad than it
is on an iPhone as I'm into feeling the layout of pages, but I still
use a computer for this sort of thing by default. Every now and again
I'll be out and about for a few days & I'll be without a laptop which
would be a good oppertunity for my iPad to shine, but I tend to take a
bluetooth keyboard with me for these trips anyway, so the touch screen
doesn't get that much use.

I've purchased two iPads so far with the intent of finding a use for
them, but for me at least, there isn't really a space in my life for a
device that isn't a phone or a PC.

Cheers,
Ben.

The beauty of reading archived messages is that most of the follow-up

wait for an answer as the answer is already available. <Smile>.
