Hi Robert, A standard scale is limited to providing your total body weight. As Lois points out, the Aria analyzes your BMI or body fat. A weight of 150 pounds could be interpreted differently depending on the amount of body fat included in the analysis. The medical community now takes a much closer look at one's Body Mass Index (BMI) when assessing obesity. The Aria and other scales designed to calculate BMI send a very low current through your body. The results of the information gathered from the low-voltage current and your total weight calculates your BMI.
As an aside, anyone who has an implantable device with a battery should check with the company that makes their device to ensure using an impedance scale will not interfere with their device. For example, spinal cord stimulators, pace makers, or any type of drug delivery pump.
