Are you on WiFi or cellular data when you have to do this? I have allowed Downcast to use cellular data to download and stream episodes and I don’t have to manually enable the download queue, the Podcasts I set up to download do so automatically as soon as I open the app and it’s done checking for new episodes.
I also prefer Downcast over the native Podcast app although the Apple Podcast app has one big advantage and that is that you can use SIRI to control playback. If you have Podcasts in Apple’s Podcast app, you can say “Play the so and so Podcast to SIRI or you can say while it’s playing “Skip ahead 2 minutes” or “Skip back 42 seconds” or whatever. I will say that it took me a bit to figure out that in Downcast, you have to go to the downloads tab and enable be download queue before podcast episodes that you've told Downcast to download will start to do so.
