When I got my 5s last October, I still had my iPhone 4 in my pocket. They turned off my 4 when they turned on the 5s. No fooling around etc. I still use my iPhone 4 via WI-FI. Some of the apps I had on the 4 are now paid. For example, iPhone Life back then was free as an app but is now paid. I can also load NLS Talking Books on to my 32 GB iPhone 4 when ever I get connected to WI-FI so it's now a book reader.

Alan

Actually, all of this can probably be done over the phone without going in unless you want to do that. I know a friend who works with Verizon just porting numbers when people call in and also once you get your new iPhone, you just turn off your old phone before setting up the new one and that deactivates the old one. I don't think they have to do any hands-on programming for you to put your old phone on another line on your account and add that line. In fact, I did something like this a couple of years ago except that a number port wasn't involved. You may decide it's easier to go in but I think it actually isn't necessary. It's amazing how much they can do just with you calling in.

I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf.
I got crumpled wads of tear-stained paper
thrown in the trash!
Then God gave me a new heart and life:
His joy for my despairing tears!
And now, every day:
"This I call to mind,
and therefore I have hope:
The steadfast love of the Lord
never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness."

Keith, I have experienced a similar type situation. You will have to deal with your carrier. They will have to program the number to the phone. You can purchase your phone from Apple, but don't do anything to activate it. Take all of those steps when you get to the AT&T or Verizon store. I forget which carrier you said you used.

Once Apple ports her number they can move her number on to your phone

Hi,

Does your experience provide any guidance as follows?

I have a Verizon account. I have to purchase my new phone from the Apple
Store as I have a gift card for this purpose.

My daughter will be getting my iPhone 5, but currently does not have a smart phone. I want to add her to my Verizon account as a user with the iPhone 5.

I'm thinking I'll need to buy the iPhone 6 from Apple and remain on contract
with Verizon. I'm not aware of any other way to get her and the iphone 5
added to my Verizon account than to then take it and her to a Verizon store
to set up the account and have them transfer her phone number from her
pay-as-you go basic cell phone.

I mean, I don't think Apple can do this in one step. Or can they?

Thanks. Keith

Every time I buy a new phone I give my current one to my wife. With Verizon it is easier to have the phone company make the changes to the numbers. I
would highly suggest that you both first back up your phones though.

Has anyone swapped an iPhone with a family member? You guys are on

Is it fairly painless?  :)
