Giving you something is not taking something from you, though. I don't see that logic. If I am your neighbor, and I know your favorite chocolate bar, and I buy one at a store, come to your house, and put it where you store your candy, are you going to be upset at what I did? This is what Apple did. If you don't want the free gift, don't take it. But why complain?? It just doesn't make sense.

Hi,

I think this all boils down to choice, and the perception of choice. Where Apple took a misstep was n taking away some perceived control from the consumer. It's purely psychological in my opinion. In many ways, being forced to take something you don't want is emotionally similar to having something taken away from you. I agree, realistically, this isn't a big deal, and has little to know tangible effects. But in general, I do think its bad form. I'm actually a bit surprised to see Apple make a mistake with users such as this.

I mean, if they just had it as a free download in the iTunes store, and had it on their feature page, none of this would even be an issue. I figured the marketing people at Apple should have seen this coming.

Just my 2 cents. :)

Mark, but it's their house and not yours. You may have a key for your room, but there probably is something in their terms aand conditions to which you

perfectly OK for them to do this.
Anyhow, I do find it interesting, I never even wasted a thought on the fact
that maybe this could be annoying. They give you the album, it's there for
you to download or not. If you set iTunes not to show your cloud purchases
unless they are downloaded you will never even see it.
OK, that's the last I have to say about it. I did download it and it's
actually not a bad album. Apart from that the entire issue is about as
pointless as the discussion about Apple downloading new iOS updates to your phone or the one about Apple not allowing you to downgrade to older versions
of iOS. Sometimes life just is so unfair and aweful, isn't it.

Hello Sieghard,

My friend, I agree with you in most aspects of your reply accept one.

You stated that if someone gave you a free CD, you would accept it
graciously. The key word here is accept. No doubt that you would, as would
I. However, that is not what Apple did, What they did is more like : You
come home, one evening, open up your locked house, and find that someone
broke into your house and placed a CD on your kitchen table without first
asking permission to enter your house. It is not the free album that I and
others object to but the way in which they delivered it.

I don't know who Kim is and I guess this is one example where repeating
statements from others without checking results in spreading wrong
information. When I opened iTunes I did not see the album because I have
iTunes set not to show "purchases in the cloud". I had to first uncheck that in Settings before I saw the album at which point the album showed up, but I
definitely had to download it first. On my phone I also am not showing my
iCloud music and the album still is not showing. I manage the music on my
phone via iTunes and I sync selected music so until I connect my phone to
iTunes and check U2 this will not sync to my phone which means it will not
take up a single Bite of space on my phone.

I am really surprised how many people are upset with Apple for giving them a
free album especially one from a popular band. Yes, not everybody may like
U2, but what ever happened to "you don't look a gift horse in the mouth". If somebody gave me that CD physically as a present I would not bite off their head, but I would thankthem and if I didn't like it I would either give the
CD away or throw it in the garbage later. It appears that in about a month
this will disappear from people's accounts if you don't download it.

I thought it worked that way too but Kim is reporting that this one is being
downloaded automatically and to get it off your device you have to move it
to the cloud or somewhere but you can't get it out of ITunes.

I am just saying what she is reporting not authenicating her statements.

Music you buy is like apps you buy and it has nothing to do with iTunes.
Anyhow, if you don't download it to your iPhone or other iDevice it takes up no space just like an app you once bought and deleted takes up no space, but
it's still there in your purchase history for you to download if you want
it.

Hi,

According to Kim Komando Apple did this but once it is in your ITunes you
can't get rid of it. And, it is taking up most of the memory on small
memory IPhones.

Wow am I glad I almost never use ITunes.

I found it amusing to see the schtick Tim Cook pulled with that. It was fun,
and while I'm not fanatical about U2, I'll give it a listen. I thought the
song that was performed was pretty nice. But hey, if you don't like them,
you can remove them. It doesn't count against your iCloud space, though.

Don't worry, nothing was hacked. That was a stunt Apple pulled on Tuesday,
basically crediting every Apple ID tied to an iOS device with the album.
Instead of a code to download it, though, it essentially told iTunes that
everyone "bought" the album. It was free to everyone, and now everyone has
it in their purchase history. Surprise!

Hi,
I was going through my music and I discovered U2's latest album. I didn't
buy it and I have no credit in the iTunes Store. Have I been hacked somehow? Has this happened to Anton else? Where did it come from? Could this have to
do with the extra iCloud space I just got? Help!
