Hi Christopher and others, So after downgrading to iOS 7.1.2 (to see if it works) and then upgrading back to iOS 8 and restoring my backup, my phone is back to where it was. I once again tried to delete an opten mail message by touching the delete button above the home key and then double tapping it. It works fine for me every time. I deleted 5 emails this way, each time I just double tapped since once the message deleted the next one opened but focus stayed on the delete button so I just double tapped again, then again and so on.
I wonder if maybe Reduced Motion got turned off for those who experience problems and that messes up certain gestures?
