If it crackled, it's something else. My iMini started crackling all over VO
and things; thought the speaker was a goner; but a power down and reboot
solved it so far.

It is possible, but not likely. Most likely just the sound volume got turned
to 0 somehow. iDevices keep track of earphone volume and speaker volume
separately which explains why the external speaker is working. Here is what
you should try:

Go to your home screen
Plug in your earphones and do a 2-finger swipe up. This will cause Voiceover
to start reading from the top.
Now repeatedly press the volume up button onl your headset and see if the
volume comes back.

Subject: Ear-phones stopped working suddenly in iPad mini

Listers,

I was using my retina iPad mini using my ear-phones when all of sudden I
lost sound. At first I thought my iPad had frozen. But when I unplugged
the ear-phones, I could again hear Voiceover. I tried another pair of
ear-phones and the same thing happened. When I twiddle the jack in the
ear-phone jacket, I can hear tiny crackling and a semblance of sound for a
mini-second. Do you think that my iPad has developed a fault with the
ear-phone socket?

Many thanks,

Andrew
