If it crackled, it's something else. My iMini started crackling all over VO and things; thought the speaker was a goner; but a power down and reboot solved it so far.

Most likely just the sound volume got turned to 0 somehow. iDevices keep track of earphone volume and speaker volume separately which explains why the external speaker is working. Here is what you should try: Go to your home screen Plug in your earphones and do a 2-finger swipe up. This will cause Voiceover to start reading from the top. Now repeatedly press the volume up button onl your headset and see if the volume comes back.
