I had the exact thing happen to me. I never did get it to work, even with a
full restore of my phone. I ended up getting a new phone. It did work on
my iPhone 6 finally.
I'm not sure of anything you can do. Perhaps an update will fix the issue.
I was feeling like I was the only one until now. I'm sorry, of course, that
you also have the problem.

In iOS 8, Looktel Money Reader does not turn on the camera light in
order to see a bill. VoiceOver says "Money reader running," but
nothing happens after that. it asked permission to access the
camera, and I gave it. Settings says it is using the back facing
camera, which is what I expected. But no identification is
happening. Is there a setting somewhere I am missing? I deleted and
reinstalled it, shut down the phone and shut it up again, ... no joy.
