Personally, I do both. I regularly backup to iCloud, but I also try to backup to iTunes every so often and make sure my apps and other purchases are synced with iTunes. I have started doing my iOS updates through iTunes, mainly because you get lots more feedback of how the process is going. Verses on the iPhone, where at some point, the phone goes quiet and if you're blind, you don't know what is happening. To each their own though.
