If you have read some of the messages on the list about the AT&T next plan, the Verizon edge plan is basically the same thing. It means that you pay an extra cost to purchase your smart phone at full retail unlocked price over about 18 to 24 months. Usually after about one year or one and a half years you can turn in your phone and stop paying the rest of those payments and start a new one. Almost like a lease to own.
