The concept seems strange to me. Let's say that I bought an app 2 or more
years ago using my card. Can the person I am sharing with get this app onto
his or her phone at no charge?

What if I want to buy them an app for Christmas without their knowledge?

  Chris,

Family sharing is so you can see the purchases of another family member and
he/she can see yours. You have to add one first. It will all be on one credit
card. You will be able to download each other's apps and music for free. I
guess there is also a calendar that you can share.
