To me, it's no more confusing than 8, 81, 811 and so on. It's simple math.
8, followed by 8.0.1, followed by 8.0.2, followed by 8.1.

Brandon did a far better job explaining the version numbering scheme than I
did; good job Brandon!
And to offer some insight to another issue that was mentioned in this
thread; I do think it's somewhat confusing when a person has to listen to
8.0.1 vs. 8.1, it isn't so obvious to somebody who is listening casually
rather than one who can see or already understands the version numbering
formats.
