Just to add to the confusion--I usually don't like to pile on with a topic--it stopped working for me or worked very intermittently starting a few months ago on IOS 7.1.1.
I tried uninstalling and re-installation to no avail. Strangely, when I updated to IOS 8.1 a couple weeks ago, and went into privacy and insured it had access to the camera (a new setting in IOS 8), it began to work again and recognized currency instantly as it used to do. I know that there is definitely some kind of bug, but it obviously doesn't affect a lot of people. But, I empathize with those who have had trouble because I was there.
