I also never manually lock my screen, but keeping the setting to auto lock 
setting to the lowest option of 2 minutes and recharging the Ipad to close 
to 100% each time,
I probably need to recharge the Ipad Air 2 or 3 times each week. Of course, 
it depends on how  much you use the Ipad each day.
