Hi Jerry,
As Alia and Ben already pointed out, it is absolutely essentials that you immediately change your password since you already clicked on the link and entered it. You said you did so and that is good, just make sure you are using a strong password and not anything which is an actual word even if you substitute a certain letter with a number. “Goldfish”, for example, is not a strong password and “Goldfi1sh” where you substituted the “I” with a “1” is just as unsecure. As you already pointed out yourself, you noticed that once you clicked on the link it showed an Ip address and not something like apple.com followed by a forward slash and other stuff. You can almost always tell right away from the link they want you to click on or even from the email address where the email came from that it’s fake. If the link is hidden, e.g.e it says “Clicke Here”, then just right click on it or the email address, choose to copy the email address or copy the hyperlink and paste it into Notepad and you’ll then see the actual email address of the link. I get tons of such emails and I have even received actual phone calls where usually somebody who speaks really bad English told me that he is calling from Microsoft and that they determined my computer had a bad virus and in order for them to fix the problem and keep me safe, he needed me to go to a certain web address and give him remote access to my computer. I love these calls and totally have my fun with thses guys. I usually tell them that I can’t go online right now because my entire family has just been murdered and the police is there and how come he is calling just then, did he have anything to do with it. I then put on Alex, my store’s manager, who by then knows what’s going on and he pretends to be the police asking him for his phone number and so on by which time these sort of callers usually hang up in a big hurry *smile*. We do the same to tele marketers. It’s amazing what people come up with and it’s even more amazing how some people apparently fall for this stuff. If you Google “How to come up with strong passwords” you wil find good information, but basically a really good and secure password which can’t be broken should be random or appear random, it should include both upper and lower case letters, numbers and, if allowed, symbols like an exclamation mark, question mark, Dollar sign etc. It should also be at least 12 characters long. Here is one good way to come up with very strong passwords which are easy for you to remember, but pretty much impossible to crack by brute force: Step 1: Think of a sentence, the sillier the better. For example, you might like to watch hockey while you kick back on the couch and have a beer, so do this: It is fun to listen to Hockey, have 23 Beers and relax! Note that I capitalized “Hockey” and “beer”, the punctuation including the exclamation mark at the end and no, I do not promote you becoming an alcoholic, but remember, silly is good. Now take the first letter from each word including the punctuation and the number and you get this: IiftltH,h23Bar! Now this is 15 characters long and while I have a few passwords like for my bank or my Roboform password manager which are up to 18 characters long, you could come up with something that is 12 characters long which is still very secure. I would also make sure that you use different passwords at least for things where it really matters, e.g. your online banking, iTunes, Amazon and other shopping sites. I think also it’s not so bad to use an easier password for things where it is not such a big deal if somebody hacked into it or where it’s unlikely somebody would even try like for example for apps which require you to set up an account for syncing data like the Paprika recipe manager or Flight Tracker. Thanks so much for the help. I never experienced something like this before. Anyway i changed the password and, really i only had 1 device, (My IPhone) that was using that specific password just in case that happened. I guess you live and learn. I never gave any other details so I really got lucky there. I keep getting the same message and I have learned enough over the years to never and I mean never click on a link in an email such as this. The best thing to do in this case is to delete the message and then go into the Appstore and try and purchase an app. If your account is truly locked then you will be prompted for more information in order to unlock it. Hello, I have a question for all of you on the VI phone list. So I keep getting this email, and it says "your Apple online access has been temporarily locked quote "click here to confirm it and unlock "then, it wants my username, and password. Then it want my credit card number, which to me seemed a little bit suspicious, so I did not go any further. And I'm about to change my password. I would like to know if anyone can tell me if this is a real legitimate email or not? Do I need to confirm my account with them or is this just a hoax? Also The strangest part, was that it opens up and IP address, instead of ID.apple.com <http://ID.apple.com> . So I'm kind of concerned about this.and they sort of don't know what to do with it. Just to see what would happen to see if it would prompt me for the other message it did with the credit card number, I did click the link and I saw where it said this account has been suspended and nothing else. Awfully strange. I would think that if Apple wanted to suspend my account, I couldn't download from the app store. I just downloaded a dark room for the app store so something really strange is going on. Sorry if there are any errors in this message, I am dictating to my iPhone at this point and I do apologize if there are any mess ups LOL. Thank you all for your help, I do appreciate it. Should I maybe call Apple and conferment? Just out of wonder and again I do appreciate all of your help. Jerry Mader -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list.
