I have never closed apps or reset my network. I feel that it's a waste
of time and not proven to be of value. It is a recommendation that is
made by someone who does a podcast which some of us listen to. I am
comfortable in saying that you will be okay avoiding these steps.

Yes, i don't want to do any of these things either, I am too new at this to want to be resetting networks and stuff, and my bf has no clue about
this stuff as he does not own an IDevice, but he is sighted.

In layman's terms, why is this helpful or important to do before an
update? Thanks. I have never done this before an update.

Reset network settings delete all networks set up on your device as well
as reset carrier specific settings on iPhone and probably iPad

What does the reset network settings do? Also, thanks for letting me
know about the voiceover improvement. I am so excited about those
fixes.

For those wondering, here are the accessibility fixes mentioned by
AppleVis:
1. The screen now correctly scrolls to follow the movement of
VoiceOver focus. This has been a significant problem since the initial release of iOS 8, and means that VoiceOver users no longer have to resort to 3-finger swiping and locating by touch to do simple things such as opening email attachments or making purchases from the Amazon
Mobile app.
2. Siri now functions correctly when used with VoiceOver, and all
commands/responses appear to be spoken fully.
3. VoiceOver now consistently announces when a new push notification
is received, even when the device is locked.
4. VoiceOver now automatically reads the Caller ID for incoming phone
calls.
5. If your iPhone is muted, VoiceOver once again provides feedback when you touch or swipe the screen when there is an incoming call. 6. It appears as though some work has been done to prevent the screen
from auto-locking while VoiceOver is speaking.
7. VoiceOver appears to perform better when navigating the "Details"
screen of message threads that contain attachments.

It looks like among other things, 8.1.1 should run better on the 4S
and the older iPads.

Subject says it, just use the usual precautions:

1. Sync and backup your phone either to iCloud or iTunes

2. Make sure all apps are updated

3. Remove all apps from the app switcher and at least reboot your
phone by
turning it off and on again or do a Reset all Network settings which
will
also reboot your phone.

Happy updating,

Sieghard
