The problem with the giraffe is that whenever you get a new phone that may be a different size and shape, you will need to get a new giraffe.

Subject: RE: giraffe reader versus stand scan.

I have both the Giraffe Reader and the StandScan. I am waiting to receive a different stand called ScanJig. Each one has its place depending on what the individual needs.
Access World did a review of all three stands over the last couple of years.
I'll put the links to the articles below:
Giraffe Reader and Prizmo:

They reviewed StandScan and TextGrabber here:

Here is the review of the ScanJig:

I'd recommend taking the time to read all three articles before deciding on one. I'd also recommend spending several hours with the KNFB Reader app because you may find that you can get perfectly good scans without a stand once you get used to how far above the page you need to hold the phone, etc.
But, the stands are there if you prefer not having to think about it.

HTH,

Richard

Subject: giraffe reader versus stand scan.

hi list.

I have just purchased the Knfb reader. Granted I have only played with
this app for a little while, but I find, given my spatial orientation
difficulty, that I am having trouble positioning the iPhone the correct
number of inches above the page I would like to scan. If I do enough
fiddling, I can manage to get all four edges in the camera's viewfinder.

I have tried this with both a small and large hardback book. I have
used the page that is the straightest for testing.

Given this problem, I am considering buying either the giraffe reader,
or the stand scan. I am leaning towards the giraffe reader, because of
its portability factor, but am wondering if the light provided by the
Knfb readers flashlight,as well as the flash on the camera, are enough
to suffice in most environments? are there situations where the stand
scan, because of its built-in light, would perform better than the
giraffe reader?

how important is lighting to the results of the scanning process?

Thank you very much for your help.
Julia.

I'm not wearing a diaper, so don't try to change me.
