Everyone is stuck on using a third party app to read audiobooks, but I've seen no one simply mention to change the file attributes from within iTunes, at which point, the files will be classified as audiobooks and moved accordingly.

Simply highlight the file or files you wish to instruct iTunes that they're audiobooks, then press your applications key, and press the letter G for Get Info and press enter.

Once in the properties of the file, press tab to get to the list of tabs, if not already there, and press the right arrow to get to the options tab.

In the options tab, press tab to get to the combo box labelled, "Media Type:" and press the down arrow to identify the files as an audiobook file. Once done, make sure you check the box that says, "Remember Playback position", and the box that says, "Skip when shuffling", then tab to the ok button, and press the spacebar.

I should mention that the above steps are for Windows based PC's or MAC's booting Windows. I should also mention that from that point on, the files will be located under books in your media library, they will no longer be kept with the rest of your music, that is, unless you have auto sorting set to off.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Hi Fanus,

My WiFi at home is ADSL hence it has nothing to do with my cellular data limit. That means that as long as I am connected to my WiFi at home or at work my cellular data is not being used and while I think there is a limit to how much data I can use on my ADSL, it is so high that it's never been an issue. . I don't know what arrangement you have. WiFi can also use cellular data if you are using some sort of hot spot or smarthub, but like I said, that is something you probably know. When you say you have "WiFi which allows me to connect to the cell network for internet purposes" that sounds to me like you are using cellular data for everything.

Sieghard

Hello Sieghard
Thanks, that sounds quite easy.
I am curious. You asked if I can't do it with wifi. Well, I have a wifi network because I have a wifi which allows me to connect to the cell network for internet purposes. How would one do a wifi transfer?

Hi Fanus,

Can't you do it on WiFi? Anyhow, to do this in iTunes, connect your phone,
go to it and in the list view which starts with Summary arrow down once to
Apps. Now tab or use F6 until you get to file sharing. Here you will find a
list of apps which are capable of iTunes file sharing. Voice Dream will be
one of these, arrow to it and then tab to the "Add" button. Browse to your
book on the computer and select it. It will take a moment or a few moments
and the book should be added, now if you sync your device the book should
transfer.

Regards,
Sieghard

If you have Voice Dream, zip the files into one file. You can use
either iTunes or even better dropbox to import them into voice dream.

Hello Richard
Thanks for this. It sounds a much easier way to listen with voice

I don't know that this is less tedious, but it is necessary if you want
those files to be seen as books.
When you impoort mp3 files into iTunes, it assumes they are music. So,
depending on how the files are tagged, you may find them under artist,
title, unknown, etc. in the music folder.
With iTunes 12, I find this whole process a bit more challenging than it
was before.
You can search for the book in the music library, then if your search
gets
you all the files, you can right click and select get info. You will then
need to change the "kind" from music to audio book.
You will also have choices of skip when shuffling, remember your place,
which you want if it is a book.
If the files are not tagged correctly, you may find chapters out of
order.
Remember, iTunes does not care what the file names are, it sorts only by
the
internal tagging.
I believe folks on this list have recommended software that can make the
tagging and all that much easier, but I don't recall what the name was.
Personally, if I want to listen to an audio book that is in mp3 format,
I
now use VoiceDream Reader.
With VoiceDream, you simply need to make sure the files are named in
such
a way that they will be sorted in order, add them all to a zip file with
the
zip filename the name of the book. Add the zip file to dropbox, and use
VoiceDream to import the zip file.
When it is done, you will have a book that is named whatever the zip
file
was named, and each file will be treated as a chapter in the book.
  It works fabulously.
  HTH,
  Richard

    Hi all,

I am not sure this has been covered, but when I try to add a folder
that
has mp3 files of audio books into iTunes it gives me the ding that it has
moved it into my library but I do not see the book in my library. I know
if
I combine all the files into 1 big file and then try to transfer it into
iTunes it works just fine, but that is so time consuming. If anyone has
any
suggestions on how to make this less tedious I would greatly appreciate
it.

    Thanks,

    Sharon
