Just type the number where you want to send the message into the To field, then swipe right to the message field and double tap on it to enter editing mode. Type your message and tap Send.

My common knowledge tells me to go to messages, then compose. When I activate compose I land in an edit field which says "to" if I swipe to the right there is indeed a "text message" field. When I swipe back to the right and enter the "to" number there, the "text field" is no longer there when I swipe to the right. My question is therefore what am I doing wrong?
