Actually, I like that, one of the benefits of the bigger screen, used in 
landscape of course.  I think even the iPad Mini will support single column 
mode when in portrait.
But I use left thumb to go down the message list and another thumb to split 
tap it to select it, then do a 2finger slide up in the right half of the 
screen to read that message;  don't even move my left thumb all the time. 
It's possible the phone would work this way in landscape too, though not 
tried it.  Wouldn't get many messages listed across the width of the screen.
But having device laid across both palms and using both thumbs works quite 
well really.

How do people deal with the iPad split screen using VoiceOver?  For example, 
when I try to use an iPad and double-tap on an email message, my list of 
messages is still there.  It takes me a while to find the actual message. On 
my iPhone, I can just double-tap on a message from the Inbox and it’s there 
instead of the list of messages.
