Actually, I like that, one of the benefits of the bigger screen, used in landscape of course. I think even the iPad Mini will support single column mode when in portrait. But I use left thumb to go down the message list and another thumb to split tap it to select it, then do a 2finger slide up in the right half of the screen to read that message; don't even move my left thumb all the time. It's possible the phone would work this way in landscape too, though not tried it. Wouldn't get many messages listed across the width of the screen. But having device laid across both palms and using both thumbs works quite well really.
