Hello Christina. I've played Audio Defence extensively. It is strictly
a combat game. It has some strategic depth and is quite well put
together. For teen or adult audiences, it's a perfectly
run-of-the-mill action game. However, there is no exploration like
there is in the other games this company has produced. You're
stationned in the centre of an arena and zombies of various kinds
approach you. Using various weapons, you try to kill as many of them
as possible which earns you gold and diamonds. The challenge is in
learning to use different weapons, choosing which to upgrade, figuring
out which zombies to attack in what order. Basic prioritization and
combat problems. It makes use of the gyroscope in your i device so you
turn your body to aim and shake your phone to swing your hand weapon
if zombies get that close. It certainly can give one's heart a good
workout.

There are plenty of games like this in the sighted world. They're
usually marketted to older kids or teenagers. I certainly wouldn't
recommend it for younger children. You hear zombies dying, weapons,
and your own sonically gruisome death when you eventually become
overwelmed and they kill you. Everything's pretty over the top. The
real novelty is that it's in binoral audio so you hear zombies come
from behind you. You literally have to turn to face them and tap or
shake your phone to use your weapons. It's pretty effective and I
think it would likely terrify a young child. Frankly though, I've
heard more tramatic stuff in movies. There's an unreal quality to the
whole soundscape.

There are a large number of accessible games which you may find more
suitable. Ear Monsters is a different less horrific arcade combat
game. You need to hit monsters by tapping the correct part of the
screen which corresponds to where you hear the monster. It's
soundscape is more cartoonish and kid-friendly. Blindfold Racer is
designed specifically for children. Sound Ninja and Nebula are two
more arcade action games I'd consider kid-friendly. You may want to
consider games in other genres. Stem Stumpers is a very well designed
puzzle game for blind and sighted people. If you haven't already done
so, go to
www.applevis.com
Look in their app directory in the games category. People are still
testing capabilities and figuring out what works on smartphones when
it comes to accessible games. There's a lot of potential waiting to be
tapped. The next couple of years are going to be pretty exciting for
gamers I think.
