Be a lot simpler to use a light detector app.

Oh, that would be so wonderful!

I have lights all over my apartment that are the kind where they are on/off
when one switch is up and another switch elsewhere is down, etc. and I find
it almost impossible to keep track of this and turn on lights when they
should be on and turn them off when they should be off and figure out what
other people may have done!

Subject: Accessibility of app to control Philipps or Belkin WiFi connected
LED light bulbs

  Hi List,

I was wondering if anybody has Philipps Hue connected light bulbs and
whether the app is fully accessible. For those who don’t know what this is,
the product consists of a bridge which connects to your router and which can
then talk to up to 50 light bulbs. You can then control said LED light bulbs
via the free app and turn the lights on/off, set brightness level, change
the colour of the light from regular warm white to any colour you can think
of and create schedules which turn lights on or off at certain times and so
on.

The product is pretty expensive at this point, a starter pack with bridge
and 3 light bulbs is $199.99, each additional light bulb is $59.99. You can
get a bridge with 2 of the so-called “Lux” light bulbs for $99.99 and
additional bulbs for $29.99. These less expensive bulbs can only be dimmed,
but cannot change colour. There are a couple of styles like regular A19
household bulbs or BR30 floodlights.

I just saw that Belkin has released a competitive product under their Wemo
line of home automation products. At this point they only have bulbs which
cannot change colour and the pricing for those is the same as the Philipps
ones. I really hope this drops in price to a point where bulbs would be
$19.99 or so and maybe $29.99 for the ones which can change colour. You can
pick up a good quality LED light bulb these days for around $8 or $9 so
paying a $20 premium just so they can talk to the bridge is steep, but I am
still wondering about the accessibility. If it comes to a point where all
bulbs in the house are like this light detectors would for the most part
become a thing of the past as eventually we would just tell SIRI to turn off
all lights (still wishful thinking at this time, but I also think this may
only be 2 or 3 years away).

  Regards,
  Sieghard
