OK, thanks for clarifying. So indeed it's a quality issue that
needs to be fixed with better QA/CI/Review.
Note that it's perfectly possible that dropping the "next" branch is a
red herring. Perhaps the breakage aggravated me just because I *had* to
upgrade and not just *had some time* to do it.
On the other hand, bisecting is definitely much harder now.
(And I have to say good things too, Lucas always extremely helpful and
responsive to my reports).
