Mathematica 8 is now fully working for me with the code in CVS HEAD.  I
have also checked in documentation for the new VGL_ALLOWINDIRECT option.

This whole exercise has required about 25 hours of free labor on my
part.  I think Wolfram owes me a lot of beer.
