Well, unless the applications you're using use OpenGL, then you don't
need VirtualGL at all.
You might try Xpra, which is a different type of X proxy that is more
oriented toward individual applications than full remote desktops. It
can also be used with VirtualGL, if necessary, but that shouldn't be
necessary if all you're doing is running an IDE. FreeNX would be
another possible solution. (NX is sort of a hybrid between an X proxy
and an X protocol compression solution.)
