Huh, most of the way there now!!

i removed ~.nv, which then subsequent runs created .cache/  and so on from 
there and still had the issue. 

So I renamed that directory, and lo and behold, it works!! Also it works 
upon subsequent runs /within/ that terminal session in xterm, through the 
VNC client. 

...and then I close the xterm, open a new one, and same thing. It doesn't 
work until I recursively remove the .cache folder.
