You're going to need to walk me through what you're doing, because I
can't find anything resembling an Ubuntu Package Manager on 11.10.  I
tried installing Synaptic, but I can't figure out how install a .deb
file using that method.  Note that the documented method for installing
TurboVNC (using dpkg -i from the command line) works fine.
