AMD invented the 64-bit extensions that are now generically referred to as "x86-64" or "x64", but some O/S's call them "amd64" for historic reasons. Back when the extensions were first introduced by AMD (2003 timeframe), of course Intel didn't have them yet, because they were still trying to convince everyone that Itanium (AKA "IA64") was the wave of the future. Thus, there were two competing architectures: AMD64 (x86-64) and IA64 (Itanium). Intel ultimately adopted x86-64 and gave up on Itanium, but the AMD64 name is still retained in some places.
