It is definitely possible to enable gdm without uninstalling lightdm. See

I'm not sure what you mean regarding "for some silly reason." The reason is not
silly at all. Unity 3D doesn't work in TurboVNC (and other VNCs as well), so it
has to use Unity 2D.
You need to be methodical with issues like these. In your message below, you
describe at least 4 separate issues, and I suspect they are all known issues,
but when they are merged together like that, it's impossible to tell whether
what we're doing to fix the known issues will fix your issue as well.
