The 4.2 release candidate of VirtualBox: https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=51405
includes a new environment variable (VBOX_CROGL_FORCE_SUPPORTED), which, when set to 1, will disable the use of the offending VBoxTestOGL application. I checked in a patch to vglrun that causes it to always set that environment variable for any programs or scripts that it launches. Thus, the documented procedure for launching VirtualBox should work again, at least on Linux. The "alternate procedure" (using CR_SYSTEM_GL_PATH) does not currently work, but the VBox developers are looking to re-enable this in a later release of VBox, since it is generally a cleaner and safer method of using VGL with VBox (doesn't require making VGL setuid root.)
