That is not "outside of VirtualGL." Further, spawning non-3D apps such as xterm in VirtualGL is not a recommended course of action. vglrun should be used to launch only apps that use 3D. I guess any workaround for Ansys will remain undocumented, if you are unable to provide the information I need. There is a script that is part of Ansys, and that script calls "ls", and that is where a hangup occurs if you start Ansys directly with vglrun on RHEL 6.
