If your server is running "headless", then there are special things you have to do in xorg.conf to start an X server without a screen. Others on the list can provide more details of that. You must have an X server running on the VirtualGL server, and there must be a 3D accelerator attached to that X server. This is called the "3D X server", because VirtualGL redirects all 3D rendering commands to it. The "2D X server" is where the final rendered images are drawn. See the User's Guide for more details.
The choice of port 4242 was arbitrary and had a lot to do with me being a rabid Douglas Adams fan. You can start vglclient on any port.
