They aren't the only ones to have decided so (and in their case, I think
they dropped 2D due to the effort required to maintain and keep it up to
par with 3D). Qt is thinking along the same lines of OpeGL is the future:

We disagree. We concluded a couple of years ago that OpenGL is the future.
Therefore, that's not an argument.

What would be an argument would be to be able to support in the same build
multiple GL libraries: ANGLE, desktop GL, GL ES, etc.
