ok, so I checked again outside of vm, and opening such files from the command line using the Mac's open command leads to an error message even without the two-line script I was using. I think this is a mac os x problem. In any case, I suggest eliminating it from the bug list, sorry for not checking this more thoroughly previously and thanks for persisting! best, E
