ok, so I checked again outside of vm, and opening such files from the command
line using the Mac's open command leads to an error message even without the
two-line script I was using.  I think this is a mac os x problem.  In any case,
I suggest eliminating it from the bug list, sorry for not checking this more
thoroughly previously and thanks for persisting!  best, E

Bug description:
when reading mail using vm, given an attachment with a non-english name such as
מקום למדפים.pdf
it does not open when I click on it with mouse-2 or press enter. things work
fine if I edit the message and change the file name to english.
