I have used DFSMS/VM for DASD movement without ISFP. The line mode
interface to DFSMS leaves a lot to be desired but it is workable. It's a
lot better to use it if you need to move a whole, fragmented volume of
mdisks to a different volume than doing it by hand or, IMHO, with
DIRMAINT. We do have DIRMAINT.
We also use the RMS function of DFSMS without VMTAPE or any kind of tape
manager. We use VMBACKUP and it will issue tape mount requests to whatever
id is the Tape Operator. In our case, that is our SysOper id where I have
the programmable operator running. When it sees a VMBACKUP tape mount for,
in our case, a tape volid within the 3590 range of tapes, it issues the
appropriate mount msg to RMSMASTR. Works like a charm.

All this without DASD!

7. IBM tells you for z/VM's DFSMS/VM you need ISPF/VM for $25K (was
($50K) and it is not true for cheaper DIRMAINT ($1K S&S) provides same
functions.
We are heavy users of DFSMS/VM and do not use DIRMAINT. Just what
functions of DFSMS/VM does IBM say DIRMAINT does? I think I am having
a problem comprehending that statement.
If one is using the RMS function of DFSMS/VM and not SMS, would you
also need some sort of tape manager too?
