I share a couple of ATL's between z/VM 4.4 and z/OS 1.4.  Two VM lpars and 2 OS lprs, all with full access to all the drives in both ATL's.  What we don't use, that used to muddy up the waters for me in a previous life, is MIM on the MVS side, or VM either for that matter.  If an address is ATTACHed on the VM side or allocated on the MVS side, the control unit won't let that same address be grabbed by another system.  RMSMASTR just goes to the next address on the list and tries there.  If it runs out of addresses, it just waits and periodically retries.  If I remember correctly, the wait period and retries are part of the configuration of RMSMASTR.  Don't quote me on that, because it's been over a year since I set this up on VM.  You don't absolutely have to use RMSMASTR but since DFSMS/VM, including RMSMASTR, comes with VM, you might as well.  For our heavy backup times, in the middle of the night, I just schedule the VM backups so that they are not contending with the heavy MVS backups.

We have one between z/VM 4.4 and z/OS. You do need DFSMS (RMSONLY) on VM.

Subject

z/VM and shared IBM 3494 Library.

Hi, gang.

How doe one share an IBM 3494 ATL (configured to support virtual tapes)
between z/VM 5.1 and z/OS, each running in it's own LPAR? I suspect I
need DFSMS/VM on the z/VM side.

Any hints, configuration setup, documentation pointers, etc. will be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
