Using mini-disk is a good idea. It’s the best way but extra work is required. Using full volume (duplicate with production volumes) is not a problem if you take precautions. These duplicate volumes only cause problem during IPL (sometime unexpected IPLs) when VM tries to vary on volumes and attach them to the system. I’m in the position were I can dictate how DASD is used and I tend to reserve devices at the high end of a string for VM /VSE upgrades and DRP testing. These volumes will have duplicate volids with the production environment but do not cause a problem since these volumes well be viewed after the low address (production volumes) are attached to the system. I also use the config file to keep that string of address off line at IPL. OK, now I'm curious. I've never encountered a VM function that absolutely, positively had to operate on *real* cylinder 0 to work properly -- AFAIK, the "virtual" cyl 0 has always been good enough for 2nd level guests. What functions would care about this (assuming that DDR properly offsets as needed if you're restoring from a minidisk back to a real volume)?
