Extsing links will not cause this behaviour of DIRMAINT.  In your case 
DIRMAINT tells you that the already is a minidisk at the place you want 
the old MDISK to be redefined.  Exisitng LINKs would only cause that 
DATAMOVE cannot format a new minidisk/clean an old one.
