Dave Jones provided a good explanation.  But to clarify further, the 
Linux-based SSL "engine" is used as a transparent proxy to protect *VM* 
TCP/IP applications such as telnet and ftp.  (If you have a CMS-based web 
server that doesn't support SSL, you can use the VM SSL server to provide 
the needed function, too.)
