I think your only options would be:
a) Do the DVD install, skipping tape
entirely.
b)
Schedule some downtime on your production system (yeah, right) and do the
install there. Get everything up and going, then bring it down and back up on
the other system, and bring production back up on the first
box.
c) The
tape units should have more than one channel attach. If they aren't all used,
run a channel to the second box. Vary off a tape drive on the production system
and vary it on at the development system, and do the install there.
d) If
all the channels are used by the production system, steal one for a weekend to
do the install.
Option
c is the way we've done it. I can't have a tape drive of my own, because they
are finite and valued resources for zOS, but I can occasionally borrow one, and
it's just a matter of varying it off on the zOS systems and varying it on in
zVM.
Disk
isn't tape, so an IPL tape can't just become an IPL disk via any known magic,
other than the products that were mentioned, and I'm sure you'd have to have an
operating system in place to run the product, which makes it harder to do an
initial install using those products, and puts you back in the same boat you're
already in.

I did nothing already. I only readed the manuals and found myself thinking about those questions. I don't really know if we can ask for DVD installation. We are only going to test z/VM, this is my very first contact with it. We have two mainframes (basically the production one and the backup/development one) and we would like to install z/VM on the last one, but we can only read 3480s from the production one. So what I thought was copying the tapes to DASD in the production machine, on shared DASD. If I could do this, my problems would be gone.
I talked to my boss and I think we'll order DVD installation. But, just in case we finally use tapes, I'll try to understand if the third phase (the one that happens after load the first DDR) can be done only from DASD.

First: Welcome to z/VM!
You did not cite where you are in the installation documentation where it
discussed IPLing the tape twice, so I have to presume that it is early in
process. The first IPL will bring up a standalone IPLable ICKDSF program,
with which you can initialize and format new DASD. Or, you can format the
DASD from some other running z/VM or z/OS. When the IPL from the tape
finished loading ICKDSF into memory, the tape stops right there. Don't
rewind it or move it
The second IPL of the tape loads the standalone IPLable DDR program
(something like FDR on z/OS, but nowhere near as advanced). With this you
can restore the z/VM "Initial Installation System" - which is a z/VM
system that IBM built so that installation programs can be run. It it NOT
the system you will use for production.
Once the IIS is loaded, you IPL that and begin the actual restore of the
fully-maintained z/VM system from the 3390 System DDR tapes.
I strongly suggest that you use the two-sided "z/VM Summary for Automated
Installation and Service" as an overview, and actually perform the
installation following the much more detailed z/VM Guide for Installation
and Service.
If you would like, I can e-mail to you the PowerPoint format presentations
I deliver at SHARE: "z/VM Installation - What Are You Afraid Of?", and
"z/VM Installation - It's Installed, Now What?". The are current up to
z/VM 5.1.0 Speaking of SHARE, you might what to consider visiting
www.share.org and registering for the next conference (Seattle, March
5-10, 2006). You won't find a better place to learn about z/VM and at a
very reasonable price considering the value derived.
Another recommendation. Unless your hardware does not support it, you
might consider re-ordering z/VM to get z/VM 5.2.0 which begins shipping
tomorrow (Dec 16,2005). Why go through the effort to install a system one
step out of pace?

Just a stupid question
Hi all!
I'm new in z/VM, and I must try to install it. My question is:
I was reading documentation and you should use the same tape in 2 IPLs for
doing different things. How do they do that? Do they check for the res
volume to be initializated?
And the other (and most important question): Could I copy the tapes on
disk
and do IPL from these disks?
I have problems for reading 3480s in the machine where I'm trying to
install VM.
