Last April, we had to decommission our last mainframe (VM) because
all the applications had either moved to Windows or Solaris. All the
financials moved to SAP R/3 running on Sun's Solaris kit back in 2001.
All the Sun kit is now reaching capacity and end of life, so we
need to replace with more capacity. We are constrained by space because
we have so so many Intel servers running the other services.
The obvious path was to consolidate our servers to reduce space and
increase capacity, and we have managed to get interest in installing
another mainframe, although we can't call it that any more - it is just
a large server ;-) .
We are able to go out and buy Intel or Sun servers without any
problems, but we have to go to tender and jump through hoops to get any
other kit, so we have started to tender.
Initially IBM came back and made us a real good offer, but they have
just come back saying SAP R/3 6.40 kernel with Oracle DB isn't certified
for support. The only thing supported is Z/OS with SAP and DB2. I don't
particularly want to have to introduce Z/OS here having at last got rid
of MVS/370 just a few years ago.
So the question is .... Does anyone out there run SAP R/3 6.40 with
Oracle 9.2.0.6 under Linux on VM and with guaranteed support? I would
really love to know and get a REAL computer back in our machine room.
If anyone does, which Linux and do you have any contacts I can refer to?
