Gah! Must have an unsaved emacs buffer. Yes, that should be perlapi.h not
perlaip.h.
The double-linebreaks came from the ether somewhere. I MIME'd up the patch
and sent it using MIME::Lite and then bounced it from my account here, but
apparently fscked things up somewhere. (I do so loathe the new Eudora's
penchant for messing with formatting--it's altogether too darned clever for
my own good)
