I don't know why, but I can *not* get RC1 to fail again the way it was
before. This is quite vexing. All's not lost--in the process we've got a
configure question to enable DEBUGGING if you want it, and a quiet bugfix
to subconfigure.com. (The symbols setting secure logical translation and
prefix defaulting were switched)
I'll have a patch out sometime today, I hope.
