I know I should only speak when spoken to, and no I don't know what's going
on either, but I did go through the exact same steps you did two minutes
before your message came in. Quite strange.
I then got the following test failures using DEC C 5.2 on OpenVMS AXP 7.1:

[.lib]vmsish............FAILED on test 7
[.op]taint..............FAILED on test 10
[.pragma]warnings.......FAILED on test 196
