Dan, I've been through some (the same??) similar problems, which you will find
described in
http://www.xray.mpe.mpg.de/mailing-lists/vmsperl/1999-09/msg00001.html
in particular sections 1-3. I never actually solved the problems, but they
were very much related to the name clash produced by IO/Tk::IO.
I hope you can use this as input to your quest for solving the problem.
