Thanks Martin (and Carl too) for the help with this.  The machine in question is not 
on a cluster and has probably been in its current state for a long time (perhaps since 
a 7.0 upgrade a couple of years ago) without this issue causing any problems.  I'll 
try to put it on someone's list to take care of, though.

Are there other backlink problems that Perl can or should work around when it gets a 
returned filespec from lib$fid_to_name?
