Okay, I put my CPAN patches etc. up on the web:

it includes the pipe patch, some other fix patches, a patch to CPAN 1.54
and the VMS::FileUtils that need to be installed prior to installing
CPAN 1.54.
I'd call the CPAN stuff "preliminary"...but once you get a bit of it going,
it should be easier to track down the remaining problems.
